In partnership with the City of Helsinki’s VIPA (Virtual Disability Services) program, we created a VR solution that provides a fun and engaging new way for intellectually disabled adults to learn essential apartment cleaning skills. This tool empowers instructors to teach and assess skills in a safe, virtual environment.
The pilot was coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki as part of the CommuniCity project, funded by the European Union.
Client challenge – VIPA needed a new way to overcome the difficulty of teaching important household cleaning skills to intellectually disabled adults, transforming a mundane task into a motivating experience.
Our solution – We created “Clean Home VR,” a fun and interactive simulator where users learn by playing. Set in a virtual apartment, the game challenges players to clean and organize against the clock, turning practical skill-building into an engaging activity.
Channels – VIPA clients practice household skills using their Meta Quest 3 headsets, together with instructors who assist them during the training sessions, using PC screencasting when necessary.
Outcome – The simulator has become an invaluable tool for VIPA’s instructors. It not only makes learning fun but also helps their clients build the real-world skills and confidence needed to live more independently in their own homes.
The pilot was co-created with VIPA instructors and their clients with the clear goal of making the VR experience completely user-centric.
The process involved a close collaboration through design workshops and regular meetings. We then held a dedicated user testing session at VIPA’s premises, giving 11 end users the opportunity to try the solution firsthand and share their thoughts.
Based directly on the insights we received during testing, our team made the final adjustments to ensure the VR experience was both effective and engaging.
